Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)

The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics OBGYN Department received a grant from Iowa Health and Human Services in 2020 to implement the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model.  This model is meant to screen for substance use disorders during pregnancy.  Pregnant patients seen at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics OBGYN, and Family Medicine departments are screened at the confirmation of pregnancy, New OB and 28-week OB appointments utilizing the 5P’s screening tool.  Based upon patient responses, providers perform a brief intervention and/or referral to the Supporting, Opportunties, Achievements, and Recovery (SOAR) Clinic.

Supporting, Opportunities, Achievements, and Recovery (SOAR) Clinic

The SOAR Clinic team is also funded by the Iowa HHS SBIRT grant and is made up of interdisciplinary members including: OBGYN, ARNP, Social Work, Addiction Medicine, Family Medicine and Research.  This clinic specializes in seeing pregnant and postpartum patients who have current, or history of substance use and disorders.  The SOAR Clinic partners with the UI Health Care Women’s Wellness and Counseling Service to provide medication management and brief intervention or long-term therapy services to these patients.  The patients seen in this clinic often have in-depth histories of trauma and mental health symptoms, so offering a mental health component in the SOAR Clinic is crucial for comprehensive care.  Additionally, the SOAR Clinic partners with UI Health Care anesthesia and NICU providers for prenatal consults before birth to ensure a safety plan is in place.
