Prerequisite Course Requirements

Biological Sciences

Required Courses:

  • A Complete Course Sequence in Biology (General Biology I and II, or Animal Biology, Human Biology, or General Zoology). Courses taken from a community college must be at the general level, and not at the introductory level.
  • A Course in Physiology (Animal, Exercise, or Human)*
  • At Least 3 Additional Upper Level Courses in Biology or Zoology (These courses must require prerequisites to get into the course.)

* Note: A two-semester combined anatomy-physiology course sequence may satisfy this requirement. If you have any questions about your specific course sequence, please contact us.

The University of Iowa PA Program does not consider most nutritional science courses or physics courses for our Biological Sciences course prerequisites. Examples of Other Upper-Level Courses:

  • Cell Biology**
  • Genetics**
  • Immunology**
  • Microbiology**
  • Molecular Biology**
  • Pharmacology**
  • Anatomy
  • Embryology
  • Endocrinology
  • Histology
  • Neuroscience

** Highly Recommended

Traditionally, successful candidates from our program take 2-3 upper-level Biological and Chemical Science courses per semester (junior/senior year), take a majority of upper-level Biological and Chemical Science courses from a 4-year institution, and have minimal courses completed via an online program.

Chemical Sciences

Required Courses:

  • A Complete Course Sequence in Inorganic Chemistry (General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II). Courses taken from a community college must be at the general level, and not at the introductory level.
  • At Least 1 Semester of Organic Chemistry* (This course must require a prerequisite to get into the course.)
  • Introductory/General Biochemistry* (This course must require Organic Chemistry to get into the course, with the exception of BIOC 3110 from the University of Iowa.)
    • The Biochemistry course requirement must be completed at the time of application submission.

* A survey course in Organic Chemistry/Biochemistry may not satisfy this requirement. BIOC 3110 from the University of Iowa will satisfy our Biochemistry course requirement.

* If Organic Chemistry/Biochemistry is a combined course, you must complete the entire course sequence to receive credit for both of these courses.

Traditionally, successful candidates from our program take 2-3 upper-level Biological and Chemical Science courses per semester (junior/senior year), take a majority of upper-level Biological and Chemical Science courses from a 4-year institution, and have minimal courses completed via an online program.
