Dlouhy wins inaugural Getch Scholar Award

Brian Dlouhy, M.D., UI assistant professor of neurosurgery and member of the Pappajohn Biomedical Institute, has been named the first Getch Scholar by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders (NINDS) and Stroke and the Congress of Neurosurgeons (CNS).

As the NINDS/CNS Getch Scholar, Dlouhy will receive up to two years of funding to help launch a dual, clinical-research career. Dlouhy’s research will investigate how the forebrain affects breathing during seizures, which has implications for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). His clinical practice focuses on pediatric neurosurgery with a focus on pediatric epilepsy.

Given for the first time in 2016, the Getch Scholar Award recognizes “neurosurgeons who possess unique clinical and research skills that identify them as the next generation of neurosurgical leaders.” One award is given each year to a candidate competitively selected from among U.S. neurosurgeons in their first two years following academic training.
