UI health sciences campus colleges and departments partnered with the UI Office of Admissions to host the 4th annual Health Sciences Visit Day which occurred on Saturday, June 18th for prospective high school students and parents visiting the UI health sciences campus.  The day event included STEM educational experiences and interactive/hands-on exploration tables.  Students picked a health sciences area to visit. Along with the day’s activities, these visits were held in hopes to inspire prospective students to pursue a career in the health sciences.

Visits held in the Microbiology department included Professor Rich Roller’s lab where he discussed how fluorescent proteins are used in microscopy to study viruses. Graduate student Ashley Cooney went over virus structure and how viruses can be used in gene therapy to treat diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
