The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to announce that Chad Grueter, PhD, associate professor of Internal Medicine, has been named Vice Chair for Research, effective July 1.
Dr. Grueter is ready to lead and support this mission of inquiry and discovery. A member of the department, the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center since 2013, Dr. Grueter completed his PhD in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Vanderbilt University followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at University of Texas, Southwestern. Since arriving at Iowa, he has distinguished himself as a scholar with more than two dozen publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. He has secured funding to fuel his research from both federal as well as private sources. Moreover, in addition to his own R01 that have funded examination into transcriptional processes disrupted in heart disease, his interest in team-based science has led him to serve as co-PI on multiple other projects. He has also made education and mentorship an important component of his work, regularly coaching learners at every level toward their own discoveries and publications.
This deep well of experience particularly as a collaborator will serve Dr. Grueter well in this new role as Vice Chair. Among his portfolio of responsibilities, he intends to build and expand our internal and external grant review processes, establish communications channels to foster new collaboration with the ultimate goal of increasing our multi-investigator grant applications, increase our social media presence, and help our young investigators establish their careers as independent investigators in the department.
Dr. Grueter takes over for former Vice Chair for Research and current DEO for Internal Medicine, Dr. Isabella Grumbach, who said,"When I took on this role in 2014, I knew then what an exceptional opportunity it was, given the depth and breadth of our department’s research activities.
