EMS Education

The Emergency Medicine Learning Resources Center (EMSLRC) is a State of Iowa Bureau of EMS-approved EMS training program and one of the oldest training programs in the State of Iowa, established in 1978. The EMSLRC has been active in the education of EMS students from across Iowa and the United States, as well as providing training to UIHC faculty, staff, and residents. The EMSLRC Paramedic program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP) and provided the state’s first paramedic training program. The Center currently offers Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses in the fall and spring semesters, and two EMT academies in the summer.  Two Paramedic cohorts are offered each year, a fall semester start provided on a fire service A-B-C shift schedule, and a four day-per-week, nine month academy program that starts each spring. The EMSLRC Paramedic program is one of less than ten programs that administers the curriculum in a true “flipped-classroom” learning model. Advanced EMT and EMS Instructor programs were recently added to the EMSLRC course offerings. The EMSLRC is an American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center and offers several of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) continuing education programs:

  • AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • NAEMT Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS)
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • NAEMT Geriatric Education for EMS (GEMS)
  • AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • NAEMT Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP)
  • NAEMT Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
