Research Summary

My research involves studies in which red blood cell survival and red cell volume are measured in infants, particularly critically ill infants. My lab is interested in: 1) in identifying the optimal RBC transfusion product to administer to infants; and 2) in understanding mechanisms of RBC survival. Other ongoing pre-clinical and clinical studies involve optimizing erythropoiesis following erythropoietin administration in anemic infants. The focus of these translational studies is on understanding mechanisms of neonatal anemia such that appropriate therapies may be instituted. My principal collaborators include: 1) Donald M. Mock, M.D., Ph.D., University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences; 3) Peter Veng-Pedersen, Ph.D., College of Pharmacy, University of Iowa; and 3) Ronald G. Strauss, M.D., Department of Pathology, University of Iowa.
