  • The Carver College of Medicine Diversity Physician Shadowing Program


    To make shadowing opportunities more accessible to undergraduates from minority or disadvantaged backgrounds exploring careers in medicine.

    The program will provide one half day shadow experience per semester.  During each semester, participating physicians will be from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine (and subspecialties), Department of Otolaryngology, Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Radiology, Department of Ophthalmology, Department of Pathology, and the Physical Therapy Program.

    Basic Eligibility Requirements

    • Minimum GPA of 2.5
    • Be a currently enrolled student at the University of Iowa or a member of MAPS@Grinnell
    • Attend Professionalism Training with Dr. Denise Martinez, Assistant Dean, Office of Cultural Affairs and Diversity Initiatives
    • Complete mandatory HIPAA compliance training and health paperwork prior to shadowing

    Preference will be given to students who:

    • Identify with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine
    • Come from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background
    • Have demonstrated interest in issues affecting underserved populations and health disparities  
    • Are members of the University of Iowa or Grinnell College MAPS Chapters (Minority Association of Pre-Health Students)

    You will be required by the end of the semester to submit through this site a brief summary of your experience, what you learned, how you have benefitted and feedback on the program. 

    Dates & Deadlines:

    September 14th - Shadowing applications due.  You will be notified of your acceptance to the program by September 15th.

    MANDATORY Professionalism and HIPAA training.  If you have ever participated in a training with Dr. Martinez, you are exempt from this requirement. If not, you must attend one of the following sessions:

    • Monday, September 19th: 5-6pm, MERF 2117
    • Wednesday, September 21st: 9:30-10:30am, MERF 2156
    • Thursday, September 22nd: 5:30-6:30pm, MERF 2156

    October 3 - December 9: Physician Shadowing experiences dependent upon department and student availability.

    December 31st: Evaluation of your experience due to Office of Cultural Affairs and Diversity Initiatives
