Breast Surgery Fellowship Program
The University of Iowa Department of Surgery is offering a Breast Surgery Fellowship. The Breast Fellowship Program is offered by the Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology. The Breast Cancer Program is part of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, a nationally designated NCI center, and is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to the improvement of breast cancer care.
Goals of the one year fellowship are to:
- Provide additional training for the management of breast diseases and cancer,
- Participate in the multidisciplinary aspects of patient care,
- Understand and participate in clinical research activities.
In addition to the breast surgery service, fellows will participate in rotations in radiation oncology, medical oncology, breast imaging, plastics, and pathology services. The fellow will also participate in genetic counseling clinics.
During the surgery rotation, fellows will gain experience in:
- Ultrasound-guided core biopsy
- Sentinel node biopsy and axillary dissection
- Skin sparing mastectomy
- Central duct excision
- Breast biopsy technique
Fellows will participate in weekly multi-disciplinary clinics and conferences. An integral part of the fellowship is the didactic experience which includes:
- Multi-disciplinary Tumor Board
- Surgical Oncology Teaching Conference
- Morbidity/Mortality Conference
- Grand Rounds
Fellows will be expected to participate in a research project that would lead to a presentation at a national meeting, as well as participate in the educational activities for medical students and residents, and community outreach.
