The Iowa PSTP recognizes that the postgraduate training
objectives and career goals of each trainee are unique. To facilitate
the development of an individualized training plan, a PSTP career
mentor will be selected by each trainee at the beginning of Year
1 of residency. The PSTP career mentor will meet regularly with the
trainee to assist with choices regarding elective clinical rotations,
subspecialty fellowship, postdoctoral research mentor, and additional
training.
Individualized research experiences and degree-conferring
programs in basic, clinical, and translational research are available
through the laboratories of the Carver College of Medicine. To
complement and strengthen the trainee’s research experience,
graduate coursework in epidemiology, biostatistics, and clinical
trial design is also available through the University of Iowa College
of Public Health.
The training plan will be individualized according
to the career goals of the trainee and specific requirements for
board eligibility in the chosen medical specialty. A typical course
of training will last five to seven years and may include training
in a primary specialty (e.g. Internal Medicine or Pediatrics),
a subspecialty, and two to three years of postdoctoral research training.
Following completion of the Pathway, participants will be board
eligible in both the primary specialty and a subspecialty (if appropriate).
