The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes is committed to providing excellent clinical care, education of learners at all levels, and the advancement of knowledge through pursuit of biomedical research. Clinical care is provided in the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital inpatient units and the Pediatric Specialty Clinic. All division faculty members are board certified in pediatric endocrinology. Faculty members are regionally and nationally recognized for their expertise. The faculty, in collaboration with pediatric nurse practitioners and specialized nursing staff such as certified diabetes educators, endocrine nurses, dietitians and social workers, are focused on the delivery of excellent clinical care. The division uses a well-received multidisciplinary model and provide individualized services that have consistently placed our patient satisfaction scores above the ninetieth percentile in comparison to national peers.
The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes is highly dedicated to educating the next generation of academic pediatric endocrinologists. The Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program was first accredited in 1984 and has been accredited continuously since then. Fellows are involved in basic and clinical research projects, and have strong clinical training in endocrinology and diabetes. Graduates from the program are active in pediatric endocrine programs across the country.
All faculty members are currently engaged in research projects across the spectrum of clinical, translational, and basic science. Projects include clinical and translational studies on type 1 diabetes including but not limited participation in the Diabetes Research for Children Network (DirecNet). A number of multi-center clinical trials are on-going. In addition, innovative studies on the early life causes of type 2 diabetes and the treatment of insulin resistance are performed in Dr. Norris’ research laboratory.
Education and assistance to practicing physicians and allied healthcare providers throughout the state of Iowa and beyond is provided through the division so that they can also improve healthcare by properly referring and managing patients with endocrinologic disorders and diabetes.
