Advances in molecular biology and biomedical research have had a major impact on the practice of clinical medicine. Sequencing of the human genome has aided in the discovery of many new disease-associated genes. In addition, technological advances have permitted the identification of the molecular mechanisms of numerous diseases.
Molecular pathology is the application of the principles, theory, and technologies of molecular biology and molecular genetics to questions and problems in clinical medicine. Applications of molecular pathology abound in the practice of both clinical and anatomic pathology.
Molecular pathology is used to:
- Help make rapid and accurate diagnoses. (Surgical Pathology)
- Detect and monitor infectious agents. (Microbiology)
- Establish clonality, particularly for lymphoid diseases. (Hematopathology)
- Assess the presence of minimal residual disease for some malignancies after therapy.
- Determine prognosis and/or predict response to therapy.
- Perform testing for inherited diseases.
The Molecular Pathology Laboratory at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is committed to the development of clinical molecular testing for the benefit of our patients and the advancement of the field. The Molecular Pathology Laboratory provides testing and consultation in all area of molecular diagnostics including genetics, infectious disease and oncology testing. The laboratory places emphasis on testing in the area of neuromuscular diseases, epigenetic conditions and molecular virology testing.
The current list of testing performed by the laboratory is listed below with links to the University of Iowa Diagnostic Laboratories (UIDL) Test Directory Handbook. The UIDL operates the Reference Laboratory/Outreach Client Services for clinical and anatomic pathology testing and consultation. The Molecular Pathology Requisitions for UIDL requests for testing can be found within each test entry. Requests for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) in-house testing can be obtained through the Laboratory Services Handbook.
Fellowship Training
The Department of Pathology offers subspeciality training in molecular genetic pathology and clinical microbiology. The subspecialty of molecular genetic pathology arose in parallel with the growth in knowledge about the molecular basis of diseases and the technological advances which made molecular diagnosis in the clinical laboratory possible. The Molecular Genetic Pathology (MGP) Fellowship Program at Iowa has received provisional accreditation.
