Bone Marrow Laboratory
Contact Information:
- Provides bedside assistance with bone marrow biopsies for diagnostic and follow-up bone marrow procedures.
- Staff is a highly visible group within the University of Iowa Health Care community of patients and care-givers.
- Approximately 1300 procedures are performed per year.
- Clinical Laboratory Scientists with in-depth hematology morphology experience:
- Evaluate bone marrow smears
- Perform special stains required for the diagnosis and follow-up on patients after therapy for increasing numbers of bone marrow transplant patients.
- Bone Marrow Laboratory staff have teaching responsibilities which include medical trainees such as:
- Pathology residents
- Medical students and externs
- Hematology/Oncology Fellows
- Clinical Laboratory Scientist students
- Offers training for laboratory personnel from outside facilities in the preparation and evaluation of bone marrow's specimens.
