Sponsored Programs or Clinical Trials Office?

There are two offices at Iowa that negotiate and administer research grants and contracts. Both are part of the Office of the Vice-President for Research but each is responsible for different types of research agreements.

Responsibilities charged to the Clinical Trials Office include the negotiation of clinical trials and other selected industrial research agreements. Studies should be processed by the Clinical Trials Office if they are supported by a corporation and involve evaluation of a technology or product, extending through:

* Clinical studies using human subjects including, but not limited to FDA Phases I, II, III, or IV clinical trials
* Pre-clinical studies that use in vitro techniques or animal models and have a direct linkage to planned clinical studies.

University policy requires that corporate sponsors of these kinds of projects be charged an F & A (indirect) rate of 25% of the total direct cost.

The Division of Sponsored Programs is responsible for processing all other research support proposals. F&A rates will vary depending on the proposed sponsor. At present, Iowa’s negotiated federal F&A rate stands at 50%.
