The Epidemiology of Nosocomial Candida Infections
Specific Aims: To define the epidemiology and mode of transmission of nosocomial infection due to Candida species.
Description: Patients hospitalized in the Surgical and Neonatal Intensive Care Units will be studied using surveillance cultures of multiple anatomic sites. Isolates of Candida spp colonizing and infecting these patients will be characterized using molecular markers (DNA restriction fragment analysis) in order to determine strain variation and spread of strains within and among patients who are linked epidemiologically. Cultures of patient care providers will be obtained in order to establish the carriage of hospital strains.
This study will provide a trainee with both clinical and laboratory research experience using techniques of "molecular epidemiology".
