Interests: Epidemiology, mechanisms and laboratory detection of antibiotic resistance particularly among out-patient bacterial pathogens, the clinical impact of laboratory testing and the development and evaluation of novel diagnostic methods in clinical microbiology.
Dr. Doern's research endeavors have led to over 160 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has been Chairman of the Clinical Microbiology Division of the American Society for Microbiology, a member of the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) organizing committee and for nine years, a member of the Antimicrobial Subcommittee of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards. He is currently on the editorial boards of four journals in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology. His teaching activities at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center led to his receipt of the Outstanding Medical Science Educator Award during 14 of his 18 years at that institution. He has delivered well over 300 invited lectures in various educational forums world-wide. In 1995, Dr. Doern received the distinguished Becton-Dickinson Award from the American Society for Microbiology for lasting contributions to the discipline of clinical microbiology.
