Iowa City/Coralville Community
- Iowa City has a population of approximately 70,000. Situated among rolling hills and fertile farmland, the city also displays the characteristic cosmopolitan atmosphere of a university community. The university is a dominant influence in the community, and cultural activities and opportunities in Iowa City abound. A fine arts complex includes a 2,700 seat performing auditorium, three theaters for live performances, a new music classroom and recital building, and an excellent art museum. The public school system is exceptional and there are 18 parks and playgrounds within the city, many of them small neighborhood parks for children.
The City of Iowa City, the University of Iowa Athletic Department, and Lake MacBride State Park on the Iowa River also provide excellent recreational facilities, including Big Ten spectator sports, sailing, canoeing and cross-country skiing. The community is also served by several radio and television stations and two daily newspapers, and conveniently located shopping centers supplement the downtown business district. The city is also situated at the hub of several large metropolitan areas, including Chicago, the Twin Cities, St. Louis, and Kansas City, Missouri. All of these areas are within a five-hour drive, making long weekend trips quite feasible for those who wish to sample a variety of atmospheres and activities.
