Externships (Post Pathology Course Student Fellowship)

Each year the Department of Pathology offers six one-year fellowships to medical students for training and experience in the department. This program is well suited for students who plan to enter fields other than pathology, as well as students with specialty interests in pathology. Most applicants are M2s; however, applications from M3 or M4 students are welcome.

 

This fellowship provides an excellent opportunity for students to consolidate their understanding of basic mechanisms of disease, normal and pathologic anatomy and effective use of the clinical laboratory. During the fellowship, students work closely with pathology faculty and house staff while gaining first-hand experience in autopsy pathology, surgical pathology, clinical pathology and teaching. Students develop case presentation and conference skills, and may collaborate on clinical research projects and publications. Students also facilitate a small group of Allied Health students in the Introduction to Human Pathology course.

 

 

The typical schedule is divided into eight rotations, each lasting six to seven weeks. These include two autopsy rotations (12-14 weeks), four surgical pathology rotations (24-28 weeks), and two elective rotations (12-14 weeks). There are 15 working days of vacation, and an annual stipend of at least $20,500 is provided.

Due to changes in the second year medical curriculum, the start date for M2 students will be near the end of June or beginning of July, effective in 2007. Start dates for M3 and M4 students are typically in concordance with normal academic calendar semester breaks in early January and July.

Students must have successfully completed the Medical Pathology courses and be in good standing in the medical school to be eligible for the program. Although University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine students are given preference, we do consider applications from students at other accredited medical schools in the United States on a case-by-case basis. As the externship is an undergraduate program, we do not entertain applications from those who have already earned a medical degree in the U.S. or abroad.
