| 069:090 Laboratory Tests and Disease |
2 s.h. |
| Most people are largely unaware of what happens after having their blood drawn for tests; but the information generated by personnel working in a clinical laboratory is a crucial part of medical decision making. The results of laboratory tests are vital in determining the nature and extent of disease and in producing a picture of the overall health of the patient. This course provides an introduction to the role of the clinical laboratory in the diagnosis and management of human diseases. Through a case-based, "whodunit" approach, students are introduced to patients, their clinical history, and symptoms. Class discussion focuses on possible conditions and the appropriate laboratory tests needed to diagnose the illness. Laboratory test results and other data are then presented and a final diagnosis reached. Cases covered include common human conditions such as alcoholism, diabetes, leukemia, and sexually-transmitted diseases. Course format is predominately class discussion and lecture, with additional laboratory demonstrations and tours of hospital laboratory facilities. Grades are based on two objective exams. There is no text; all required information is provided in the form of handouts. The course is aimed towards all undergraduates with an interest in health and disease and is particularly suitable for those intending to pursue a career in medicine, nursing, or allied health sciences. No prior science or math skills beyond those required for admission to the University are required. |
