Point of Service
The Point of Service Laboratory is composed of three divisions providing quality patient care to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics inpatients and outpatients.
Phlebotomy Services
- Provides collection of quality patient samples in a timely manner in multiple inpatient and outpatient locations at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Phlebotomy stations are located at: Family Care Center, Inpatient Phlebotomy Services, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Specialty Clinic, and Pomerantz Family Pavilion.
- Provides excellent patient satisfaction.
- Conducts education and training programs to enable employees to meet standards of practice, while promoting a safe and effective working environment.
Commercial Mailouts
- Provides physicians with laboratory testing menus for esoteric testing not performed within University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
- Selects referral laboratories for the quality of laboratory services, cost effectiveness, and efficiency of service.
- Provides electronic results availability which provides for easier reporting and shorter turn-around-time.
Emergent Care Laboratories
- Critical Care Laboratory
- Provides a satellite laboratory located near the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Room, Burn Unit, and the Transplant Unit.
- Provides valuable rapid response testing for these critically ill patients - 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
- Provides a limited test menu with rapid turnaround time of 10 minutes or less.
- Special Care Nurseries Laboratory
- Provides on on-site laboratory adjacent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Intermediate Care Nursery and the Newborn Nursery.
- Provides phlebotomy specimen collection services for these very small patients (some weighing less than one pound).
- Provides rapid response laboratory services which set the Laboratory Standard of Care for the clinical management of these critically ill babies.
- Provides a limited test menu with rapid turnaround time of 10 minutes or less.
