Welcome
A Message from Michael Cohen, MD
Professor and Head of Pathology
I would like to extend my personal welcome to you from The University of Iowa's Department of Pathology!
The Department and The University of Iowa are part of a comprehensive health sciences center that serves Iowa and the region, as well as patients who are referred here from throughout the United States and from overseas. The collective expertise of the Pathology Faculty and Staff, and the broad spectrum of diseases encountered in our center ensure for excellent and well-balanced activities in both anatomic and
clinical pathology. We are proud of the reputation for excellence in patient care, education and scholarship. There is a long history of
accomplishments in the Department and I urge you to look at the history of this department that can be found on our web page.
It was researched and written by Dr. Fred Stamler, an Emeritus
Professor in the Department, who spent his entire career here,
primarily as a surgical pathologist. Dr. Fred Dee, who currently
serves as Vice-Chair for Educational Affairs, kindly wrote additional
comments about the Lynch years. All of these accomplishments are based on the efforts of the Faculty and Staff in the Department. We are truly fortunate to have outstanding people within the Department who are dedicated to achieving our goals. I consider myself lucky to help guide this department in the new millennium.
Our Vision is to be an internationally recognized academic department, and our Mission is to provide leadership in all three of the activities of an academic pathology department, namely clinical service, education and scholarship; the actual wording of these important statements are also to be found on this web site. In addition, I am fully committed to the professional development of both the faculty and staff in the department.
The Clinical Laboratories are well recognized for providing outstanding and comprehensive care to the patients we serve. The breadth and depth of services provided are amongst the best in the country. The educational programs that the Department participates in includes medical students, clinical laboratory scientists as well as biomedical scientists. The broad spectrum and quality of our teaching programs are widely recognized. Similarly, there is outstanding scholarship in the department. Historically, we have had international recognition for our research in the field of immunology and cerebral vascular disease. More recently, the focus has also included apoptosis and cancer biology.
I am very optimistic about our future as we strive to reach the goals we have set, particularly in these chaotic times. I look forward to working with all members of the Department to ensure its continued growth and development in the future.
