Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery

  • Residency Program

The Department of Otolaryngology offers a curriculum focused on consistency and continuity in patient care by utilizing a team approach. Each year we accept five residents to our program. Our department offers five areas of clinical specialty, including:

    • Pediatric Otolaryngology: diseases in children with special ear, nose, and throat problems including developmental delays and birth defects in the head and neck
    • Otology/Neurotology: diseases of the ear, including trauma, cancer, and nerve pathway disorders, as well as audiology issues such as balance disorders
    • General Otolaryngology and Rhinology: disorders of the throat, including voice and swallowing problems, and disorders of the nose and sinuses
    • Head and Neck Oncology: cancerous and noncancerous tumors in the head and neck, including the thyroid and parathyroid
    • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: cosmetic, functional, and reconstructive surgical treatment of abnormalities of the face and neck, such as deviated septum and cleft palate

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics also offers a General Surgery internship year at our institution, allowing interns a two-month rotation through otolaryngology in addition to their other scheduled rotations.
