The 14th Annual Carol A. Bowman Creative Writing Contest for Medical Students

About the judges:

Cecile Goding holds MFAs from the University of Iowa's Nonfiction Writing Program and the Iowa Writers' Workshop. She teaches literature and writing for Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids and for the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, where her workshop, This Too Is Life: Memoirs of Illness and Health, is in its fifth year. Her poems have been awarded the Theodore Roethke Prize, the Richard Hugo Prize, and a fellowship from the South Carolina Academy of Authors. Her poetry chapbook, The Women Who Drink at the Sea, won State Street Press's national competition in 1992. "Six Degrees of Fluency" was chosen as a "notable essay" by Best American Essays 2000, also receiving the Gold Award for Best Essay from the Georgia Magazine Association.

Dr. William Davis was an English/chemistry major in undergraduate days and has a lifetime love of literature. He writes short stories now and again, one of which was published. He is a facilitator for Reading Retreats for Physicians and Spouses and a facilitator for the sophomore bioethics course. He is currently an associate professor in the OB/GYN reproductive endocrine division and the medical student clerkship director.
