Gold Humanism Honor Society

The Gold Foundation Humanism Honor Society recognizes fourth year students who are exceptional in their compassionate and respectful relationships with patients, families, peers and staff. Humanism Society memebers are selected by classmates, faculty and staff for membership in this Honor Society.

Students are nominiated by faculty, staff, and peers. Members are selected in late spring or early summer. Students who are chosen for membership in the society will have this honor noted in the Dean's Letter and will also be recognized at graduation. An induction ceremony is held on the morning of graduation.

The Society is supported by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.

Criteria for Gold Humanism Honor Society
for Fourth Year Medical Students

  • Consistently demonstrates compassion and empathy in the delivery of care to patients
  • Illustrates professional behavior by example
  • Shows respect for those with whom he/she interacts
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and competence in working with patients and family members of diverse ethnic or religious backgrounds
  • Empowers patients and colleagues through effective communication and listening skills
  • Interacts with patients and their families in ways that empower the patient to participate in their health care to the full extent they desire
  • Pays attention and is sensitive to the patient’s psychological well-being
  • Engenders trust and confidence among patients, staff, colleagues, and supervisors
  • Is willing to help others and is willing to seek help from others
  • Demonstrates concern for the general welfare of the community
  • Seeks and accepts criticism; uses it to improve performance
  • Is personally committed to self-evaluation
  • Exhibits a commitment to enhancing positive interactions among all members of the health care team
  • Through personal example encourages and empowers others to hold themselves to higher standards
  • Demonstrates personal integrity and a willingness to take a stand on principle
  • Serves as an advocate for patients and peers
