Stafford Loans for Computer Purchases

Students are allowed ONE computer adjustment during medical school beginning with June 1 of their entering (M1) year through the last day for downward fee adjustments (typically mid to late January) of the student’s final semester at the University of Iowa (M4 year). This purchase is eligible for a Cost of Attendance Adjustment.

Computer Purchase Information & Form

Stafford Loan (usually unsub loan) / Grad Plus Loan - $2,000 max*

  1. Purchase computer first, but make sure your items are not on excluded list on form above.
  2. Submit to COM Financial Services office: written request for budget adjustment, receipt and description of computer system purchased with ‘bill to’ and ‘ship to’ in the students name and showing payment made.
  3. You will be reimbursed (in 2 or 3 disbursements, timing depends on when during semester the purchase is made and what year in school you are. Every attempt is made to be sure you get your total reimbursement, minus loan processing fees of 1.5%, within a few weeks time) up to $2,000 for the cost of the items purchased
  4. Can include: laptop OR desktop computer, word processing and anti virus software, printer, surge protector and palm pilot, – check with Financial Aid if other items are desired to see if they can be covered according to federal regulations.
    1. FA adjustment for Palm Pilot ONLY available when purchased as part of computer package
    2. Everything does not have to be purchased from the same supplier or at exactly the same time, but all system components should all be purchased within a few weeks of initial purchase
  5. Amount borrowed added to total amount of Stafford loan, usually unsub
  6. Many retail stores and computer companies offer educational discounts/deals for students

*Possible only if student has not already maxed out Stafford loans for the academic year
