Welcome to Student Learning Communities at The University of Iowa!

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine has developed a community structure to manage curriculum and student affairs while responding to the needs of society. Communities for Excellence in Learning and Leadership for Society (CELLS) are designed to facilitate student involvement in peer-to-peer support, peer-to-peer education, leadership and service-learning activities. Bean Community

Our name pays tribute to a prominent figure who's legacy is still very evident in the college. Dr. William Bean served as the Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine from 1948 to 1971; during that time building a great academic enterprise that encouraged excellence in patient care, teaching and research. Boulware Community

Our community takes its name from Lois Boulware, a leader in the creation of our own Student Health Service and the originator of the patient advocacy program at UIHC. Learn more about this remarkable woman here.

Flocks Community

Dr. Rubin Flocks devoted his life to medicine. "It is clear to everyone who ever came into contact with him that Rubin Flocks was a man of singular dedication and distinction. His life was devoted to medicine, and, in turn, to humanity. A pioneer for women in medicine and a role model for all current and aspiring physicians, Jennie McCowen's life is a true embodiment of community service.
