Funded research in the Department of Neurology spans a large segment of the spectrum of neuroscience investigation. We currently host 12 individual NIH grants and 16 NIH subcontracts totaling $3.8 million annually in total costs, plus an additional 5 VA Merit Review grants.
Last year, for example, George Richerson, MD, PhD, professor and head of the Department of Neurology received a $1.4 million research grant to investigate causes, predictors, and prevention methods of sudden unexpected deaths in epilepsy.
In order to meet new challenges and seize new opportunities in the neurology field, we also rely on donations made through the University of Iowa Foundation. Donors have the option of giving a gift to the General Neurology Fund, ALS Research/Neuromuscular, Alzheimer’s Disease Research Fund, Epilepsy Research Fund, Muscular Research, Neuroergonomics Research, Parkinson’s and Other Movement Disorders Fund, Research in Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke Research Fund, and the Shirley Stoppelmoor Stroke Research Fund.
