    Brain

Neurology is the branch of medical science concerned with diagnosis and management of disorders of the brain, spinal chord, peripheral nervous system, and muscle.

Founded in 1928, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Neurology was one of the first academic departments of neurology in the nation and the first to be established west of the Mississippi River.

The department is ranked 21st in the nation overall and 5th among public universities, according to the 2011-2012 US News and World Report poll. We are also in the top 20 for training academic neurologists.

Above all, however, the Department of Neurology’s hallmark is its history of carefully integrating patient care, scientific investigation, and the education of medical, postdoctoral, and graduate students.
