Visiting Student Information and Application
The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine accepts visiting fourth year medical students from LCME accredited schools starting May 1. Applications will be processed starting June 1.
After University of Iowa medical students have been accommodated, any remaining clerkship vacancies are open to visiting students. Third year medical students and students from schools not accredited by the LCME are not eligible.
Visiting Student Policies
- Applicants must enroll in the elective during the dates offered, no exceptions. 2013-2014 Senior Elective Date Offerings:
All electives are 4 weeks in length.

- 07/29/13 - 8/23/13
- 08/26/13 - 9/20/13
- 09/23/13 - 10/18/13
- 10/21/13 - 11/12/13
- Break 12/14/13 - 01/05/14
- 02/03/14 - 02/28/14
- 03/03/14 - 03/28/14
- 03/31/14 - 04/25/14
- Only the courses listed in the elective catalog are eligible for enrollment. Click here to view the catalog.
- Applications are processed at least 1 month prior to the clerkship start date.
- We require four weeks minimum notice to add or drop an elective. When students violate this policy, their home school will be notified.
- The $100 non-refundable registration fee should be sent to Marcia Hopp, CCOM Office of Student Affairs & Curriculum, The University of Iowa, 1216 MERF, Iowa City, IA 52242. Please make check or money order payable to University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
- Living arrangements are the responsibility of the student.
Step 1: Complete the Visiting Student Elective Application (Requires Firefox or Explorer)
Applications will be processed starting June 1 and you will be notified at least 1 month in advance of the clerkship.
Step 2: Your school will be notified to verify the following:
Eligible applicants must:
- be a fourth year medical student
- be from an Liaison Committee on Medical Education accredited school
- have passed USMLE Step 1
- have health insurance
- have malpractice insurance with a $1 million per claim/$3 million aggregate minimum
- meet our health and immunization requirements
- have received HIPAA and universal precautions training
- have completed a background check
