Student Physicians for Social Responsibility
Mission
Preventing what we cannot cure.
Student Physicians for Social Responsibility (SPSR) is the
student chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), a
non-profit advocacy organization that provides the medical perspective
on 4 broad issues:
- Nuclear Arms Reduction
- Safe Energy
- Environment and Health
- Social Justice
in attempts to direct government policies towards benefitting humanity and preserving the world’s resources.
What we do
With more than 50,000 members worldwide, PSR has a long and
respected history of physician-led activism to protect the public’s
health. From its inception to thwart efforts of above-ground nuclear
testing, PSR continues to have great influence on current political
legislation involving Code Black, New START Treaty, coal plant reduction, and stopping nuclear reactor development.
Public education and awareness provides the foundation for
effecting change. Many categories of interest exist, but as a
well-informed student branch of a national organization, we can choose
the issues that weigh on our community, such as coal plant emissions,
recycling programs, mental health and social disparities in the Iowa
City area, etc, to reflect the overall mission of PSR. Any student is
welcome to bring their concerns to the meeting throughout the year and
suggest events to promote a particular issue.
SPSR seeks to empower rising physicians to extend their
responsibility for patient health beyond the hospital. Come get informed
about the greatest threats to human health while meeting others that
share your enthusiasm.
