Following is a list of scholarships available to medical students, though not all are limited to medical students. This list is not exhaustive by any means and you are encouraged to investigate other scholarship websites resources. If you are a resident of a state other than Iowa, check the websites of medical schools in your state because some regional scholarships can "travel" with a student to the school of their choice. Be creative in your search, cast a wide net, and please let the Financial Services office know if we can be of further service in your efforts to fund your medical education.

AMA Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship
These $10,000 scholarships reward current third-year medical students, who are entering their fourth-year of study. The selection of the recipients will be based on academic achievement and financial need. Multiple scholarships, funded by the AMA Foundation, the Audio-Digest Foundation, Johnson F. Hammond, MD Fund, and the Rock Sleyster, MD Fund will be awarded in 2008. Partial funding for this program is provided by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Applications available: February. Chinese American Physicians Society Scholarship
The Chinese American Physicians Society offers scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $4,000 each annually to students in United States medical schools. The CAPS Scholarships are open to all medical students in need of financial aid regardless of their hometown, sex, race or color. The applicants are judged according to their academic achievements, financial need, community service records and essays. Dr. George and Eunice Tice Scholarship

Dr. William Walker Memorial Scholarship
One $5,000 scholarship administered through Community Foundation of the Ozarks for students who will be entering their final year of medical school in Missouri or Iowa. They must be natural-born US citizens, in the top 15% of their class who are developing superior clinical skills and demonstrating the ability to communicate with patients effectively with empathy. Preference is given to veterans, particularly veterans of the U.S. Marine Corps. Two letters of recommendation from professor/dean required. Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund Scholarship
The Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund's scholarship program in an annual, merit-based competition open to civilian federal and postal employees, their spouses and college-age dependents. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and sponsors must have at least three years of service by August of the application year. Golden Key Graduate Scholar Award
Twelve $10,000 scholarships will be awarded to Golden Key members pursuing post-baccalaureate studies. Awards are based on academic achievement, Golden Key involvement and extracurricular activities. Great Lakes National Scholarship Program
Students majoring in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) disciplines are invited to apply for $2,500 scholarships under the new Great Lakes National Scholarship Program. The scholarship program, funded by Great Lakes Educational Loan Services, Inc. offers up to 750 awards to new and continuing students who qualify. To be eligible, a student must:
- Be enrolled full-time with a declared major field of study in science, technology, engineering, or math at a public or private two–year or four–year college, university, or vocational–technical school.
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75.
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Demonstrate financial need.

Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship (AAMC)
Five $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care and demonstrated leadership efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health care needs of minorities in the United States. Hoyt Scholarship
A scholarship honoring family members was established by Benjamin Hoyt, MD, who attended the UI College of Medicine for 2 years in the late 1890's. Award amount varies depending on number of applications received, average amount is $2000-$8000 per award. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of submitted CV, financial need, medical school transcripts and reflective essay based on biographical information of founder and his family. Kaiser Permanente Medical Student Scholarship
Kaiser Permanente recognizes the potential of future physicians and their contributions by offering a total of six $5000 scholarships to fourth year medical students selected for their commitment to and achievement in at least one of two areas: Community Involvement & Leadership, or Population-Based Research. Students must also be interested in seeking a residency in Northern California, and be able to participate in a one month clerkship at a Kaiser Permanente facility in Northern California during their fourth year of medical school. Kathie J Lyman Scholarship
The Polk County Medical Society board, in recognition of our Executive Director, Kathie Lyman's 40 years of service to the doctors of Central Iowa a scholarship fund has been established in her name Two scholarships of $1000 will be awarded.. The criteria for scholarship awards will be based on scholastic achievement and/or financial need. The applicant must be a legal resident of Iowa at the time of applying to medical school and currently attending an accredited medical or osteopathic school in Iowa. Along with the application, a current transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a one to two page essay stating the applicant's reasons for selecting a career in medicine must be submitted. Kathleen Fields Scholarship and Loan
Administered through Greene County Medical Center. Award amounts depend on number of annual applicants, maximum $5000 and will consist of half interest free loan and half scholarship. Students who have been admitted to an accredited medical school from Greene, Carroll, Calhoun, Webster, Boone, Dallas and Guthrie counties in Iowa are eligible to apply. Preference may be given to students attending Creighton University or Carver College of Medicine. Financial need and good academic standing are eligibility requirements. Leopold Schepp Foundation
This scholarship is based on personal character, academic ability (minimum 3.2 on 4.0 GPA scale) and financial need. Maximum annual award is $8,500. There is a two step application process. Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship
Sscholarship recognizes qualified female appliacnts who demonstrate financial need and are committed to women's issues, diversity and social activism. Medical Professionals of Tomorrow Scholarship
The Medical Professionals of Tomorrow Scholarship is sponsored by US Medical Supplies, a leading provider of medical and mobility products. There are two requirements for applicants:

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship
Paul and Daisy Soros are Hungarian immigrants and American philanthropists who established their fellowship program for New Americans to "give back" to the country that had afforded them and their children such great opportunities to assisting young New Americans at a critical point in their education to signal to all Americans that the contributions of New Americans to the quality of life in this country have been manifold. 30 New Americans – permanent residents or naturalized citizens if born abroad; otherwise children of naturalized citizen parents – are awarded a fellowship each year. At the time of their selection, fellows must be college seniors or early in the graduate programs for which they request support. Each fellow receives tuition and living expenses that can total as much as $90,000 over two academic years. Fellows can study in any degree-granting program in any field at any university in the United States. Fellows are selected on the basis of merit – the specific criteria emphasize creativity, originality, initiative and sustained accomplishment; financial need is not a criteria. Tylenol Scholarship
The makers of Tylenol award $250,000 - $350,000 to outstanding students who are pursuing health-related studies. Funds will be awarded to at least 170 students in the amounts of $1,000 and $5,000. Must be a resident of the 50 United States, Puerto Rico or the District of Columbia, have completed at least one year of undergraduate or graduate course of study by the Spring of 2011 at an accredited two or four year college, university or vocational – technical school, Must provide proof of enrollment to a public health/health education, med school, nursing and/or pharmacy degree program with one or more years of school remaining . USA Funds Scholarship
USA Funds®, a nonprofit organization that helps American families benefit from post-secondary education, offers $1,500 scholarships to qualified full-time or half-time undergraduates and to full-time graduate and professional students. Applicants for the scholarships must be enrolled or plan to enroll in course work at accredited two- or four-year colleges, universities or vocational/technical schools beginning with the fall term of the application year. The program assists students with an annual income of $35,000 or less. Up to 50 percent of the awards go to students who are members of an ethnic minority group or are physically disabled. Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program
This program is designed to provide educational services, leadership training, and funding to reimburse a portion of medical school related debt. Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding medical students for a four-year period. Students who have made a commitment to the field of family medicine and who will enter their fourth year of medical school in the fall may apply. The Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund

American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) honors the memory of Anne C. Carter, MD, with an annual award for outstanding student leadership. Ida Foreman Fleisher Fund
This fund provides scholarships for women, preferably Jewish, to obtain professional educations. Must attend school or have a hometown in greater Philadelphia tri-state area. Grant distributions range from $2,000-$8,000 and are administered by a local bank. The money is sent directly to the recipient's school to be used for tuition only. Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship
The AMA Foundation, in partnership with the AMA Women Physicians Congress (WPC), is pleased to announce the 2010 Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship program. Award up to $10,000 research scholarship to a medical student, health professional, or graduate student to study the issues generated by and affecting women in medicine. This program seeks to advance the progress of women in the medical profession, and to strengthen the ability to identify and address the needs and interests of women physicians and medical students. Leah J. Dickstein MD Award
Sponsored by the Association of Women Psychiatrists, the Leah J. Dickstein award is open to female medical students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement, creativity, and leadership. The recipient is invited to the AWP Annual Meeting to receive the award and present her work. Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (World Bank)
Women from developing countries currently residing in the US or Canada who are enrolled in an accredited institution may apply for one of six to ten grants of $12,000 each. Other eligibility criteria include: record of service to women and children in her country; intent to return to a developing country in two years; aged 25 or older at time of application. Wellesley College Scholarships

M.A. Cartland Shackford Medical Fellowship-Applicants may be graduates of any US college and be enrolled in any accredited US medical school. The award amount is $11,000 "for the study of medicine with a view to general practice, not psychiatry."
Sarah Perry Wood Medical Fellowship-Available to Wellesley graduates only who are accepted or enrolled in a medical program. Award amount up to $71,000.

Chinese American Medical Society Scholarship
The Chinese American Medical Society is offering the following scholarships to current medical students of Chinese decent. The society awards 3 to 5 scholarships a year to medical and/or dental students and scientists. These scholarships include the Esther Lim Memorial Scholarship, Ruth Liu Memorial Scholarship, and The American Center for Chinese Medical Sciences Scholarship. The society also offers scholarships for medical students working on summer research projects. The research can be basic science or clinical in nature, but must be completed in a ten week time frame. Preferences will be given to proposals studying problems related to health problems of the Chinese. Upon approval, CAMS will pay a student a stipend of up to $1,000 per month. Dr. Lester Chen Memorial Scholarship
Students of Asian descent are eligible to receive the Dr. Lester Chen Memorial Scholarship offered by the Chinese American Physicians Society. The applicants are judged according to their academic achievements, financial needs, community service records and essays. Special credit is also given to those who are willing to serve the Chinese communities after their graduation. Dr. Rudolph Jaworski Medical Scholarship (RI)
The Rhode Island Polonia Scholarship Foundation awards this $1000 scholarship annually to a medical student of Polish-American descent who is a resident of RI and belongs to a RI Polish-American organization. International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons (Christian Service Org)
Students preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical or occupational therapy, and medical technolgies are eligible to apply. A student must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen, enrolled full-time in a school accredited in the field involved, and located in the U.S. or Canada. For all students, except those prepaing for an R.N. degree, application must be for at least the third year of college. R.N. students must have completed the first year of schooling. Pre-med students are not eligible to apply. For those students seeking degrees of M.D. or D.D.S., application must be for at least the second year of medical or dental school. There is no age limit. Japanese American Citizens League Scholarship Program
The JACL offers several scholarships in varying amounts to students pursuing a career in medicine. Applicants must be an active member of the JACL to qualify. Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA)
The Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA) is a group of medical and health care professionals with knowledge of the Japanese language and culture. JMSA offers scholarship funding to medical students who have the potential to contribute to the Japanese-American relationship through the medical field. In choosing scholarship recipients, JMSA also considers students who demonstrate academic excellence and show a strong interest in the Japanese Medical Society of America.
Students who are interested in applying for a JMSA scholarship will need to complete the application forms and submit a one-page proposal on how they can make a significant contribution to the Japanese-American relationship. If selected, the student will be asked to present their proposal at the JMSA annual spring dinner in New York City.

Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Vocational Service Scholarship
Eligible criteria include: must be of the Jewish faith; born or raised in Chicago Metropolitan area or have one continuous year of employment in Cook County/Chicago Metro area prior to starting professional education; intend to practice in Chicago metro area after graduation; full-time enrollment in a professional post-graduate program; career promise in helping profession such as medicine. Georgia State Medical Education and Board Georgia Board for Physician Workforce Scholarship Program (GA)
Applicants must have financial need and a strong commitment to practice medicine in a Board-approved Georgia county having a population of 35,000 persons or less. All applicants must be legal residents of the State of Georgia and have obtained a bachelor's degree. Each applicant must be accepted into an accredited four-year U.S. medical school offering degrees in Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy. Scholarships are awarded as contracts for a maximum of four years. Repayment of the awarded scholarship will normally be deferred during the approved residency program. Nolan Scholarship (CT)
Eligible students are residents of Middlesex County (including towns of Middletown, Portland, Cromwell, Higgunum, Moodus, Haddam, Essex, Old Saybrook, East Lyme, Marlboro) who are enrolled in an accredited medical school. Orazio DiMauro Foundation Scholarship (CT)
The Orazio DiMauro Foundation is accepting applications for a scholarship for students studying engineering or medicine. Eligible students must be a full time student, a resident of the greater Bridgeport CT area (which includes Trumbull, Monroe, Easton, Fairfield, Shelton, and Stratford) and demonstrate financial need. Richard B. Irvine MD Memorial Scholarship Award (CA)
Students of accredited medical schools who reside or graduated high school in the following California cities are eligible: Concord, Clayton, Antioch, Pittsburg, Benicia, Vallejo, Walnut Creek, Pacheco, Pleasant Hill, Martinez or Lafayette. Recipients are selected based upon financial need. Rocco D. LaPenta Medical Scholarship Trust
Rocco D. LaPenta of Walpole N.H. funded this Trust to provide for tuition incurred by eligible students in the study of medicine. Recipients of this $10,000 grant will be selected based upon the merit of the applicant as shown by his or her academic aptitude, achievement, and willingness to contribute to others or the community. Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara Medical Scholarship (CA)
Applicants must have attended at least four of the six secondary grade school years at a Santa Barbara County school, and have graduated or will graduate from a Santa Barbara County high school. Applicants must be full-time medical students at an approved US college or university. Areas of study include medicine, law, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, business, education, and a variety of Masters and PhD programs. Thomas Brown McClelland Trust Scholarship (FL)
Eligibility criteria are: legal residency in Dade County, Florida, for at least the most recent five years; and great potential and promise as a doctor by their abilities as measured by grades, positions held in extracurricular activities and volunteer actions in the community.
