  • Medical Student Research Program

Research Day 2010The Carver College of Medicine has been supporting medical student research since the 1960s. In 2000, the Iowa Medical Student Research Program (IMSRP) was established to develop, organize, and integrate several different programs that are related to medical student research. Although research is not a required activity for applicants to Iowa, once admitted, students are strongly encouraged to consider research opportunities available on campus. The long term objective of the IMSRP is to encourage more students to participate in a summer research program, and to continue their engagement with scientific research throughout medical school training and beyond. The Research Distinction Track has graduated more than 200 students in the past 10 years.

    Opportunities for Student Research

The largest component of the IMSRP is the Summer Research Fellowship which has been offered at Iowa and supported by an NIH training grant since 1980. Summer Research Fellowships are available to enrolled freshman medical students and to pre-freshmen students accepted for admission and provides medical students an early opportunity to participate in a focused research project for a three-month period.  This experience, while brief, is designed to interest medical students in research and to acquaint them with career possibilities in academic medicine.
