Psychiatry Interest Group
The Psychiatry Interest Group was founded several years ago in answer to the increasing interest and awareness in Psychiatry. The field has expanded greatly in recent years, and there is much promise by way of research and new treatment options in the years to come. There is cutting edge research going on right here in Iowa. Dr. Nancy Andreasen, who is a National Medal of Science Recipient, heads the Mental Health Clinical Research Center where great discoveries have been made in schizophrenia and related disorders using imaging techniques.
The Psychiatry Interest Group has several goals:
- To introduce and promote the discipline of Psychiatry among medical students.
- To provide education and information that will help medical students learn about mentally ill patients regarding their illnesses as well as other challenges they face.
- To encourage medical students to form a network with other students interested in Psychiatry, as well as with residents and faculty.
- To encourage service to the underprivileged who suffer from mental illness.
We host a table at the M1 Activities Fair during orientation week. Generally meetings are held monthly and cover various topics of psychiatric interest. The group can be anything you want it to be, so we will tailor our activities according to the interests of those participating. The Psychiatry Interest Group is sponsored by the department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa; the group’s advisor is Dr. Linda Madson.
Faculty Advisor: Dr. Eric Epping
