The Carver College of Medicine Psychiatry Interest Group provides the opportunity for medical students interested in psychiatry to meet, learn more about the specialty and find out about opportunities for experiences in the mental health field. The group has several events during the school year covering various topics in psychiatry, including presentations from guest faculty and residents from the Department of Psychiatry who discuss their clinical and/or research interests, as well as information about student community service activities and the residency application process. Students are also involved in organizing these events. There are limitless opportunities in psychiatry today and many new research advances, including work done at the Carver College of Medicine that make it an exciting time to specialize in psychiatry.
The Psychiatry Interest Group has several goals:
We host a table at the M1 Activities Fair during Orientation Week. Generally meetings are held several times during the academic year and cover various topics of psychiatric interest. The group can be anything you want it to be, and we will tailor our activities according to the interests of those participating. The Psychiatry Interest Group is sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa. We also have an email listserv that provides updates to students on psychiatry related activities and events. Contact the group’s faculty advisor Dr. Eric Epping if you would like more information or to add your name to the listserv.
