Herbertpur Christian Hospital, India
A Global Programs elective opportunity is available for two UI fourth year medical students
to work under the guidance of the UI Department of Emergency Medicine
in Northern India during March 2011. This one month rotation combines
multicultural medicine, emergency medicine and tropical medicine. The
students will travel to the northern India town of Herbertpur and work
in the Emergency Department under the supervision of either an Emergency
Medicine faculty from the University of Iowa or a 3rd year Emergency
Medicine resident.
This elective will be offered during the February 28- March 25, 2011 block. Additional weekend dates may be needed for travel.
Students interested in pursuing this elective should show interest
in emergent and urgent patient care as well as in teaching emergency
care as activities will include patient care, teaching, and other duties
as assigned by the supervising physician.
Housing and meals are available on the hospital grounds. The housing and food costs are estimated at approximately $300.
While this is a missionary hospital, students are not expected to
attend any religious activities although they may do so if they wish.
Supervising UI Emergency Medicine faculty for this program include Drs. Azeem Ahmed and Mark Graber.
For more information, contact Mark Graber in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Photos of the hospital and the surrounding area are available at the website. (It is anticipated that members of the team may tour a portion of
India following the completion of the four week period. Participation in
this week’s activities will be optional for students.)
