Barry Freeman Fellowship
Application Process
Briefly, in order to qualify for this funding, students are required to spend a minimum of eight weeks at an international medically underserved site if between their M1 and M2 years and a minimum of four weeks if planning an M4 elective clerkship. They will become familiar with the cultural, social, and medical problems of the area they choose. Fellows are required to submit a written report of their fellowship experiences within three weeks of their return.
All fellowship recipients must work under the supervision of a health care provider who has extensive knowledge and expertise as well as a formal tie to the site (the organization or institution where the fellowship is undertaken). A letter of acceptance from the supervisor confirming details of the proposed project and stating a willingness to assume responsibility for the student's activities must accompany the fellowship application.
Applicants must submit a fellowship proposal, limited to four pages. It should include:
- the student's goals for the fellowship period;
- plan to achieve the goals;
- value of the experience to your growth as a medical student;
- description of the student’s preparation for the experience;
- budget for living expenses, travel and other project-related costs and
- two letters of recommendation in the format shown on the website. Proposals should identify the portion of the costs the applicant is prepared to bear personally or secure from other sources. Proposals ar due on January 28, 2013.
Applicants may request stipends of up to $2,000. Proposals involving biomedical research are discouraged. Students are also discouraged from applying to receive funds to do the fellowship in their country of origin.
