About George Bergus, MD
Dr. George Bergus is a Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry and is the Director of Performance Based Assessment for the College of Medicine. He received his A.B. degree in History from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976, his M.D. from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1982, and his M.A. in Education from the University of Iowa in 2002. He completed a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Rochester in 1985 and then served as a physician in the U.S. Public Health Service in Ketchikan, Alaska. Dr. Bergus joined the faculty of the University of Iowa in 1990. While here at the university he has served as the Director of the Family Practice Residency Program and now co-directs the Combined Family Practice/Psychiatry Residency Program. He has been recognized as the Resident Teacher of the Year several times by the Department of Family Medicine and the Medical Educator of the Year by the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians. He was awarded the Collegiate Teaching Award in 2008 and the President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009. Dr. Bergus is the author of over 90 journal publications and numerous book chapters. His research has largely focused on physician learning, decision making, and information acquisition.
