Kidneeds is a not-for-profit corporation founded by a family affected by Dense Deposit Disease (DDD). DDD is the new name for a disease that is also called Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis type II or MPGN II. DDD/MPGN II is a kidney disease that mainly affects children. Approximately half of all children with DDD/MPGN II will go into kidney failure between 8-10 years after diagnosis and require dialysis or transplantation to stay alive. The disease is considered to be an autoimmune disease, and it recurs in almost all transplanted kidneys. There is no effective treatment for DDD/MPGN II.
Kidneeds' mission is to stimulate medical research on DDD/MPGN II by funding grants to researchers studying the disease. Kidneeds operates a virtual Center of Excellence that connects researchers across the globe to foster collaboration and focus on finding a cure for DDD/MPGN II. It is also an educational resource for physicians and patients. In addition, Kidneeds plays a role in the MPGN Database Survey that collects epidemiological data from individuals with MPGN.
