Student Research Fellowships are available to currently enrolled medical students and to students accepted for admission for the fall, 2009 (prefreshmen). The purpose of the Student Research Fellowship program is to interest medical students in research and to acquaint them with career possibilities in academic medicine. Students are encouraged, as far as possible, to employ their own initiative in planning and pursuing a research project of their choice. This is an opportunity for students to participate directly in the investigation of a scientific question under the supervision of a faculty sponsor and to become familiar with the processes involved in defining a problem, evaluation its significance, designing experiments for its solution, and interpreting data.

Both the process of application for the student research fellowship and the actual performance of the work proposed should represent significant cognitive learning experiences and not consist of purely technical services or repetitive technical activities. Receipt of a fellowship will be noted in the student's academic file. Students are also required to present their research findings at Medical Student Research Day.

Prefreshmen and freshmen hold the fellowship during the summer. Students must be in good academic standing and not currently held to repeat a course to participate. The stipend for the fellowship is $5,193 for a 12-week period. Applications will be reviewed after the following deadlines:

M1 Deadlines
Friday, March 13, 2009

Prefreshmen Deadlines
Monday, April 13, 2009

All research fellows are required to take a Research Ethics course during their fellowship period. The course is offered simultaneously with the research.

Fellowship application forms can be obtained on this website.

Fellowship Announcement and Application

Faculty members of the College of Medicine who are Summer Research Mentors can be found at http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/imsrp/faculty.asp. Each faculty has a brief description of their current active research projects. If you are interested in learning more about mentors and possible research projects you can search for them by faculty department, by type of research or by specific keywords (e.g. hypertension) at http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/imsrp/components/srf/. There are a large number of available mentors in a variety of departments. Please note that each faculty member is limited to mentoring no more than two students during the summer. Please remember that this program is intended to be a full-time summer opportunity. If you are considering applying for a global program or MECO at the same time, be sure to contact Kathi Huebner at kathlene-huebner@uiowa.edu.

Students are required to choose a faculty mentor at the UI to support their research project. Projects that are off-campus or based internationally are not intended to be funded through this program, unless you are working with an UI mentor who has an active research project off-campus. There are a limited number of faculty mentors who meet these criteria. If you are interested in other opportunities you can go to http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/imsrp/components/otheropps.html to look at alternate research funding options. Please contact Kathi Huebner at kathlene-huebner@uiowa.edu or Dr. Christie Thomas at Christie-thomas@uiowa.edu if you have questions.
