Welcome
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics (IIHG) at the University of Iowa.
Exponential growth in human genetics research is driving the ever-increasing application of genetics in day-to-day medical practice. The unique environment of the IIHG at the University of Iowa provides unprecedented opportunities to make progress in both the discovery and translational phases of human genetics. We also seek to provide an interface for, and support of, university- and state-wide activities related to human genetics.
The IIHG serves as a high-profile focal point for the vast array of talent at our institution and through the state. By integrating state-wide activities in human genetics, we seek to promote clinical care, research, and education focused on the medical and scientific significance of variation in the human genome.
The IIHG is established as a structure with four supporting pillars. They include:
- Clinical
- Research
- Education
- Innovation
All of our services are open to faculty, trainees, and staff in the UI’s 11 colleges, as well as Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa. Many of the available services have been developed in collaboration with other research centers and offices at the UI in an effort to better integrate programs, resources, and personnel.
I encourage you to visit our website to learn more about our goals, programs, and services, and what we can specifically do to assist you as a clinician, a researcher, a trainee, or a community member.
Best,
Richard Smith
