Statistical Services

Expert statistical advice is crucial during all phases of a research study, especially the planning phase.
A creative idea, a careful plan, a place to carry it out, people to study, and finally...the results. Are they valid? Should they be published?

Expert statistical advice is crucial during all phases of a research study. From recruiting enough patients so conclusions are accurate...to administering experimental treatments in random order so results are unbiased...to selecting the right statistical tests and interpreting them correctly, our biostatisticians give counsel and advice and review study conclusions.

Biostatistical consultation services at the University of Iowa General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) are provided by Drs. Leon Burmeister and Bridget Zimmerman. Both have PhD degrees in statistics from Iowa State University and share approximately 40 years of collective experience in collaborative studies with researchers at the University's five health colleges.

Dr. Burmeister reviews statistical aspects of all GCRC protocols before they are approved by the GCRC Advisory Committee. Dr. Zimmerman provides computational assistance and data analysis for all active GCRC protocols.

Our statisticians can help you with:

  • Selection of appropriate experimental designs and sampling plans.
  • Assurance of adequate sample size.
  • Utilization of correct statistical analysis.
  • Application of masking methods and randomization techniques, when appropriate.
  • Evaluation of measurement reliability.
  • Assistance in data entry and data management.

Biostatistical assistance is available weekdays.
