General Clinical Research Center
Scatter Nurses

Scatter
nurses provide specialized nursing support for protocols requiring subject participation
outside the GCRC inpatient and outpatient units.

Scatter nurses work primarily
with studies conducted in the neonatal intensive care and intermediate
care nurseries at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In
addition, they assist with protocols in other areas of the
hospital. Our nurses have supported research conducted in Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Pathology, Speech and Hearing, Nursing, Allergy/Pulmonary, GI, Nutrition, Hematology,
Radiology, Psychology, Family Practice and Genetics departments. |
Scatter nurses are available to:
- Assist in study design and planning
- Help with Institutional Review Board (Committee A) paperwork
- Identify and recruit subjects
 - Administer drugs and maintain inventories
- Perform anthropometric measurements
- Collect blood, urine, stool, and other biological samples
- Perform heel stick, venipuncture and central line blood draws
- Process, label, transport, and store biologic samples
- Assist with research procedures
- Gather, record, and tabulate research data
- Educate clinical staff about specific research protocols
- Coordinate patient research activities with hospital staff
- Coordinate research study follow-up after discharge
- Assist with manuscript preparation

Scatter nurse participation in research projects has been
especially important in the
emotionally-charged intensive care setting where opportunities to enroll patients come and
go quickly. The high consent rate (60-80%) is largely attributable to the
success of the scatter nurses in earning the trust of patients, families and staff. Thus, with scatter nurse coordination and oversight, investigators are able to complete
studies that cannot be conducted in the GCRC inpatient or outpatient areas.
