General Clinical Research Center

Outpatient Research Facility

Years ago, research patients were kept under "lock and key." They were under 24-hour surveillance and could not leave the research unit unless escorted by research personnel. Not so today!
Although some research subjects stay days or weeks on the research unit, most live at home, go to school, and maintain their normal activities and hobbies. Special tests, interviews and sample collections are made during daytime visits to the unit and "take out" research meals are eaten at home. This greater flexibility allows investigators to study people under their normal living conditions, reduces the cost of research, and encourages more people to participate.

Participants returning for outpatient visits on the 2nd floor enjoy the comfortable surroundings of our waiting room where television, newspapers, magazines, and coffee are available.

Outpatient facilities are available for private interviews, physical exams, data management, and group sessions.  Because the GCRC is open 24 hours per day, outpatient visits can be scheduled at any time throughout the day or night, for short or long time periods. The nursing staff also provide on-site blood and urine processing and bedside monitoring of vital signs.
