General Clinical Research Center

Inpatient Research Facility

Despite a steady increase in outpatient research, many research protocols continue to require an inpatient setting to guarantee a controlled environment and to provide around the clock research nursing support.
Located on 3 South in General Hospital, the inpatient area consists of six double patient rooms which are also utilized for extended outpatient visits as needed.  The nursing staff coordinates drug administration, timed blood draws and urine collections, patient education, and other data collection and documentation.
Research protocols testing an experimental agent might require blood samples to be drawn 20-30 times over 24 to 48 hours with the volunteer being closely observed for any potential side effects. Studies of hormonal function might require blood samples to be drawn every 15 minutes for 24 hours or longer.
The GCRC nursing staff is well educated in all aspects of the 120+ research protocols conducted in the inpatient and outpatient areas and are committed to providing a friendly, professional environment to put research subjects at ease.
