Center Description

The Iowa General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) located in Iowa City is one of 78 clinical centers in the U.S. supported by the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Why Do We Need GCRC's?

The GCRC helps "translate basic research into patient care." Through the GCRC, biomedical investigators can access the resources and technologies they need to conduct research that improves human health. Without the GCRC many innovative research studies asking important health care questions might not be conducted.

The University of Iowa College of Medicine's GCRC

Our GCRC has facilitated clinical research in Iowa for over 40 years. Since opening in 1960, the University of Iowa General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) has provided a controlled environment for conducting studies with both inpatient and outpatient subjects. From accurately timed blood draws and precisely weighed diets to radioimmunoassays and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, the GCRC is without equal.  Our services include on-site and off-site nursing support, and a nurse practitioner, plus dietary, laboratory, statistical and financial assistance for investigators.  The services of an Oral and Craniofacial Component are also available.  The GCRC is administered by highly trained and dedicated professionals.

Located on the 3rd floor of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, our 12-bed inpatient area serves over 80 investigators and over one thousand inpatients annually. The outpatient facility, metabolic kitchen, and dining room are located on 2nd floor of the Medical Research Facility.  The Oral and Craniofacial Component is located in the Dental  Clinical Research Center in the College of Dentistry, 3rd floor south.

Our GCRC is a crossroads for investigators from many specialties. Physicians from adult and pediatric disciplines use our specialized facilities and staff for personalized patient care and meticulous attention to study details.
