General Clinical Research Center

Research  Safety Office

In order to enhance the safety of subjects participating in research protocols, NIH now requires that every GCRC protocol must have a safety monitoring plan. To help investigators develop safety plans and to monitor research safety issues, the Iowa GCRC has established a Research Safety Office. Janet Schlechte, MD and Chuck Dayton, RPh have been designated the GCRC research safety officers.

Effective October 1, 2001, all new protocols will need a safety monitoring plan.  The GCRC protocol application form now includes a template which must be completed before your protocol is submitted.  The template is simple and will be applicable for most protocols that involve minimal risk.  Protocols that are deemed high risk will require a more complicated safety plan.  You may contact one of our safety officers for help in preparing your plans.

The safety and well being of our research subjects is our highest priority.  The GCRC Research Safety Office is here to help protect our subjects and to help you with ever changing rules and guidelines.
