Human Subjects Training for Investigators

The NIH requires that all investigators submitting new or non-competitive applications involving human subjects must receive education on the protection of human research participants.  In addition, the University of Iowa requires all study staff (faculty, staff and students) who have contact with study subjects or their identifiable information to complete this training.

You may use one of the following options to receive your education:

    1. Attend a lecture sponsored by the University of Iowa Human Subjects Office.

To obtain a schedule for these workshops, log onto the UI Human Subjects Office and scroll down to the UI Lecture Course

      OR

    2. Complete an on-line tutorial course -- CITI.

      - Read the directions for the CITI Pogram
(scroll down to "Instructions for how to use the CITI
         program")

      - Log onto http://www.citiprogram.org and complete the
        on-line tutorial program

      - After completing all modules, print off a completion form.
Keep the form for your records. The Human Subjects
Office will automatically be notified of your completion of
the course.  You do not need to submit any documentation.

The University of Iowa maintains a list of everyone at our institution who has completed the training and is a Certified Investigator.  If you have any questions about this policy, please call the GCRC office at 384-8305.
