Thomas A. Weingeist, PhD, MD Award
Professor and Head 1986 - 2005
Dr. Weingeist was born in New York City. After receiving his PhD in Cell Biology from Columbia University he attended the University of Iowa College of Medicine with advanced standing. He completed residency and fellowship training in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery in 1976 and was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology in 1986.
During his tenure, the faculty increased from 15 to 31 full-time clinicians and basic research scientists, and the Department moved to the Pomerantz Family Pavilion. Dr. Weingeist was Senior Secretary for Education and President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology as well as President of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology.
The Weingeist endowment will be used to support clinical research in ophthalmology.
