    A.E. Braley (2)Professor and Head 1950 – 1967

    Dr. Braley was born and raised in Lake Mills, Iowa, and trained under Dr. O’Brien. After serving in the military, he became Chief of Ophthalmology at the Harkness Eye Institute, part of Columbia University in New York City. He was appointed Professor and Head after a two-year search in 1950.

    Dr. Braley was an energetic leader and enthusiastic supporter of resident education. He recruited outstanding faculty from the U.S. and foreign countries including P.J. Leinfelder, who was a resident with him, Mansour Armaly, Robert Watzke, Paul Boeder, Hermann Burian, and Frederick Blodi that placed the department among the very top programs. Dr. Braley stepped down as Head in 1967.

    The Braley Professorship will be used to honor and support the Director of Resident Education for the Department.
