The Visiting Elective Scholarship Program supported by the Department of Emergency Medicine was established to encourage fourth year medical students who are underrepresented in medicine to apply for the emergency medicine clerkship (EM:8401 or EM:8402) at the University of Iowa. The scholarship program is designed to:
The emergency medicine clerkship at UI is four weeks in length open to U.S.visiting students from allopathic medical schools. The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Iowa. In addition to required clerkship didactic sessions, clerkship participants have the opportunity to attend UI EM residency conference sessions.
VESP participation is not affiliated with the emergency medicine residency match program and participation in the program does not guarantee a residency program interview.
Scholarships (up to $1,500 each*, to be used toward visiting student elective fees, transportation costs and lodging) will be awarded on the basis of:
Applications will be considered ONLY for the first three clerkship blocks.
*Funds are awarded upon completion of the elective. Receipts must be submitted for reimbursement.
April 1st of the year applying for. Scholarship decisions will be made by May 1.
