Fall 2024 Session:  September 16 - 20, 2024

The University of Iowa Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to offer the Iowa Emergency Medicine Fundamentals Course, a unique CME experience for emergency medicine providers. Learners spend one week in Iowa City participating in a variety of activities with a main focus on covering practical, up-to-date concepts for common emergency medicine topics while allowing for plenty of time for open discussion and answering learner questions. Content experts within Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine Pharmacy, Toxicology, Ultrasound, Sports Medicine and Departmental leadership are able to share their unique knowledge, skills and insights into specialized areas of Emergency Medicine through a series of lectures, case discussions, hands-on workshops and high fidelity simulation. We are able to tailor the course to learner specific needs and interests and because of the emphasis on individualized attention, registration is limited to a small number of learners per course. The Iowa Emergency Medicine Fundamentals Course covers foundational educational material in a distinctive format that is fundamentally different from other CME courses and will provide learners with a valuable experience whether you are new to emergency medicine or have been practicing for years.

The Fundamentals Course updates the course content regularly.  Here are examples of topics that have been covered in previous courses:

  • The High Yield Orthopedic Exam
  • Approach to Acute Coronary Syndrome
  • Addressing Human Trafficking in the ED
  • Documentation Pearls and Pitfalls
  • ED Pharmacy Pearls
  • Stroke Updates
  • Seizure Updates
  • Airway Management Skills
  • Neurocritical Care
  • Pearls and Pitfalls with Common ED Labs
  • High Risk EKGs
